Helping refugees resettle to third countries
IOM Burundi plays a crucial role in facilitating the safe and dignified resettlement of refugees and other vulnerable persons of concern. Burundi has become a departure point for many refugees seeking resettlement in third countries. IOM provides transportation, pre-departure medical screening, travel assistance, and logistical support to refugees, ensuring their needs are met during the resettlement process. Additionally, IOM assists migrants who voluntarily wish to return to their country of origin and reintegrate into their communities. IOM Burundi works closely with the Government of Burundi, the National Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless (ONPRA), UNHCR, and the Resettlement Support Center (RSC) run by the Church World Services (CWS) to ensure the most vulnerable refugees have access to durable solutions such as resettlement. Furthermore, IOM Burundi operates the Migration Health Assessment Center (MHAC) in Bujumbura, providing health assessment services to immigrants and refugees for resettlement purposes.
