Preventing, preparing for and responding to disasters
IOM’s Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) portfolio aims to advance mobility-based strategies and resilience in the implementation of its activities, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – 2030. Presently in Burundi, around 90% of total internal displacement in the country is due to natural hazards and IOM works to respond to the need for prevention, adaptation and mitigation actions to avert, minimize and address displacement in the context of climate change and disasters. IOM Burundi supports the Government of Burundi in undertaking several nationwide actions, including disaster risk mapping, institutional and local capacity building, prevention and mitigation works, to strengthen Burundi’s resilience towards adverse impacts of climate change. Through community-based interventions, such as sustainable land use practices and infrastructure rehabilitation, IOM empowers communities to mitigate risks and enhance their preparedness. By raising awareness, IOM Burundi promotes the dissemination of vital disaster risk information, contributing to the overall goal of minimizing displacement and addressing the adverse impacts of climate-related disasters in Burundi.
